CULTURAL JOURNEY 2011

 

Our series of cultural events ended in November with author readings at Buch Wien literature fair in Vienna, Austria and dance performances at the Euro-Scene Festival of contemporary European theatre in Leipzig, Germany.

We hope that those of you who joined us there or in one of the earlier events in the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Finland or the United Kingdom enjoyed yourselves and got inspired by the creativity, variety and dynamism of Southeast European culture.

ZDENA PISKER: PAINTING WITH AN IRON INSTEAD OF A BRUSH

 

Zdena Pisker is the only artist in Bosnia and Herzegovina who produces encaustic paintings, i.e. using an iron to produce her paintings. A few years ago, the sixty-year-old Zdena Pisker from Zenica read an article in a magazine claiming that using an iron to paint is a form of stress relief.

“I WANT MY WRITING TO MAKE PEOPLE WONDER”

 

In November 2012 the performance of a play by the young Montenegrin playwright Jovana Bojović will be held in London. Her play entitled Peacekeeping Mission won the competition organised by the Theater Epicenter in Zagreb, which is the theatrical centre for central and south-eastern Europe, together with the Company of Angels Theatre from London.

CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR IN ALBANIA WITH BAKLAVA

 

Baklava is always present on Albanian tables on New Year’s Day.  Its taste adds sweetness to the celebration. Per tradition, Albanian grandmothers begin preparing the dough long before the long-awaited day and maintain that a piece of baklava should be eaten by all in order to have a lucky year ahead.

THE LAST YOUTH IN YUGOSLAVIA EXHIBITION IN BELGRADE

 

The phenomenon of youth alternative pop culture in Belgrade during the late 1970s and early 1980s, that of the last generation that spent its youth in socialist Yugoslavia, is the focus of the exhibition entitled The Last Youth in Yugoslavia, the first exhibition of 2012 at the 25. Maj Museum in Belgrade.

Inva Mula

Inva Mula, born in Tirana, Albania in 1963, is one of the leading sopranos of her generation. Famous to filmgoers as the voice featured in the Diva Dance in Luc Besson’s Fifth Element, she has performed to great acclaim across the world, and is a regular performer at La Scala in Milan. Her album Il bel sogno is performed with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ivo Lipanović and features famous arias by Puccini, Gounod, Massenet and Verdi.
